A North Bruny classic – a beautiful heritage home, sunshine and water views

This fine Late Victorian/early Federation country residence occupies a commanding position on a hillside that slopes down towards the shores of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the safe and sheltered anchorage of Simmonds Bay, a quiet corner of Barnes Bay.
Built in 1890 by cruising yachtsman William Lindsay, the home’s dominant features are the bay and gable frontage and bullnose veranda that are so typical of the architectural style of the era.
Inside, the home has been carefully-maintained and it retains many period features
including hallway arches, original hardwood floor, Baltic pine lining and ornate fireplace surrounds.
The house has three bedrooms, a large central sitting room and a dining/family room. There is a country-style kitchen, separate office, small sunroom, a good-sized tiled bathroom, laundry, three toilets and a covered back veranda.
Outside, a separate one-bedroom cottage offers the opportunity to generate solid accommodation income from Bruny Island’s increasingly strong tourism industry, which is quickly recovering from the challenges of 2020.
Situated on 0.6025 hectares of land in the Residential Zone, there is potential for
subdivision, subject to Council approval.
This house has played a key part in the story of North Bruny. Where today the view looks over neatly-mown pastures to a large dam, in past years previous owners had planted productive orchards, grown crops of grain, cut hay and raised fat lambs, sending their produce to market in Hobart by steamer.
The house was sold to North Bruny farmer Henry Thomas Denne in 1906 and several
generations of the Denne family owned Lyndenne for the next seven decades. In later years, when the Bruny ferry terminal was close by in Barnes Bay, Lyndenne briefly hosted a restaurant and it has since been a cherished family home for successive owners, including the current vendors, who plan to retire and move interstate to be closer to their adult children.
Mr and Mrs Lindsay, the original owners of the house, were experienced cruising sailors.
After the sale in 1906, The Mercury reported that “the Lindsays’ yacht Fancy will be missed from her moorings in Barnes Bay.”

Now, perhaps it’s time for another sailing family to take over the stewardship of this wonderful old home – and maybe to look out through the beautiful bay windows of the living room and keep an eye on their own yacht at anchor, ready for the next Channel cruise. A mooring is included in the sale.
